Two days on the “peninsula” or the bay area, or silicon valley with a Volkswagen Jetta is all I need to know that Volkswagen has made a boring Toyota corolla.
Ride/Handling (5/10): isolated from the road it is hard to feel the cars limits when going around freeway on ramps. It doesn’t feel like you are going to loose control but it just doesn’t tell you how stressed the tires and suspension are.
Acceleration/Deceleration: (6/10) Yes, no rocket ship but felt adequate in most situations. It’s faster than my 4-cylinder outback, but that’s not hard. I mean an outback has a tiny engine in a suburban size car body.
Transmission (2/10): I give it a 2 because it does move the car. The transmission is the worst part of this car. Around 20 mph it is between gears and can hesitate for several seconds while trying to make up it’s mind what to do. I think there is a manual shift option but I couldn’t figure it out.
Styling (3/10): A toyota corolla looks downright exotic next to the new Jetta. Do I need to say any more? I like the front clip lower spoiler and traditional looking headlights. It will age well but they have taken no chances with this car and it shows.
Interior (3/10): It has one, there are seats and things.... lots of plastic, the whole thing is plastic.
Toys (2/10): my 2006 mazda 3 has more toys and it’s a base model. It has lots of steering wheel controls and they don’t do anything. I would imagine a higher optioned model would have things like volume control on the steering wheel and at least one power seat. It has an auxiliary input! and a weird cable in the center console that i don’t know what is for...
Conclusion( -1 million): I would not buy one, nor would I recommend any one else buy one. It’s a boring car made of plastic that is going to compete with the corolla, civic and focus. Buy one of those instead. 10/10 would rent again because it get about 35 mpg and I’ve figured out how to adjust the mirrors.

Brah, the Jetta is pretty much supposed to compete with those.

I typically like wild cars, but this Jetta is probably my favourite Jetta ever, looks wise.
Especially GLI

those wheels and extra trim features add quite a bit to the look, rental cars are the base models with an automatic transmission

They have the clear ability for amber turn signals but refuse

I always thought the Jetta was slightly up market from those.

Don’t you guys still get the watered down, americanized Jetta?

When my dad comes down the rentals are usually fully loaded... Probably depends on the agency.

I’m not sure about the US, but in Canada, price-wise it’s the most expensive and largest in it’s class, but it’s still in the same class as the Civic, Corolla, Mazda 3, Focus, Dart, Cruze, Elantra and Forte.

Not really. Even though it’s on the pricier end of the bracket, it’s still in the bracket.

This is very much a car for the USA, it is still better than the the Chrysler option I had I think that was a 200.
